How We Do It

We pick the most appropriate vehicle based on your unit size, the site access and the landing area. If you're unsure about access, speak to our team before you book. Working with hauliers throughout the UK means we can choose the operator closest to you with the right expertise — keeping your delivery cost-effective and hassle free.

Rigid Hiab Wagon

Rigid Hiab wagons are the vehicle we use most often for portable cabins and shipping containers. The wagon is roughly 10m (32ft) long depending on deck size and in most cases can carry units up to 32ft long by 12ft wide, with an average crane reach of around 9m (29.5ft) — more with a larger mounted crane. Loads over 9ft wide require a movement order, so we need at least one working day's notice before delivery.

A rigid Hiab with a draw-bar trailer — a 'wagon and drag' — lets us bring more than one unit without needing an articulated vehicle. Two 20ft units can travel together, and where access is tight the trailer can be dropped outside, the first unit offloaded and positioned, then the second transferred from the trailer to the wagon and taken onto site. The driver then hooks back up to the trailer and leaves.

Articulated Wagon

An articulated wagon and trailer has a crane fixed behind the cab in the same way as a rigid Hiab. The trailer can carry several smaller units together, a 40ft shipping container, or office units up to 45ft x 14ft. Combined, the unit is around 16.5m (55ft) long.

Although it carries more, crane size still governs how far a unit can be placed away from the trailer — so the more detail you give us about access and the landing area, the better. An artic also needs plenty of room to manoeuvre on and off site. If you're in any doubt, call our team before booking. A flat-bed artic is the same vehicle with a flat trailer and no crane, so lifting equipment must be available on site.

Specialist Haulage

Some deliveries need specialist equipment. A loaded shipping container weighing up to 30 tonnes calls for a load-lifter wagon and trailer with twin cranes mounted to the trailer, capable of lifting from both ends and placing the container on the ground or double-stacked alongside.

Low loaders handle oversized loads and height-restricted routes, and rigid or articulated wagons with 360-degree cranes cover awkward placements. Certain extra-wide loads need an escort for traffic control, and some specialist deliveries require a site-specific report before the vehicle is dispatched. Ask our team and we'll confirm what your job needs.

Things to Look Out For

A smooth delivery comes down to clearing the obstacles in advance. Failing to prepare the site can mean an aborted delivery, rebooking delays, extra cost for ground works and downtime on your project. We always recommend a pre-delivery walk-through and an early conversation with our sales team about levelling and alternative routes.

  • Restricted access for the delivery vehicle
  • Overhead power or telephone cables above the lift
  • Soft, waterlogged or unstable ground
  • Not enough space for the crane stabilisers
  • Minimum 11ft (3.35m) clear width through any gate
  • Low bridges, weight limits or uneven terrain on the route
Narrow site gates with overhead cables and a low bridge sign

Before delivery day

  • Confirm the exact landing position on site
  • Clear vehicles, skips and materials from the drop area
  • Have a site contact on site and reachable by phone
  • Tell us about anything unusual on the final approach
